Motorist jailed for causing serious injury collision near Poole
Enquiries by officers resulted in a motorist being tracked down to face justice for causing a collision near Poole that left a man with life-changing injuries.
Archie Glen McCann, aged 20 and of no fixed abode, was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday 23 October 2026 after admitting causing serious injury by dangerous driving in relation to a collision on the Upton Bypass on Sunday 29 March 2026.
It was reported that at around 10.35am that morning McCann was seen driving a blue Volkswagen Polo dangerously, apparently racing other vehicles.
The victim, a man aged in his 40s, was travelling along the route in convoy with his brother and together they were able to bring traffic to a stop as they had concerns over the manner of driving of the Polo.
The man got out of his vehicle and approached McCann’s car, at which point the defendant reversed his car into another vehicle before making off, colliding with the victim as he did so.
The Polo was seen driving off the wrong way down a slip road.
The victim sustained a fractured skull and bleed to his brain as a result of the collision, as well as a broken leg. He has been left permanently deaf in his left ear.
Enquiries by officers quickly identified McCann as the driver of the Polo, but he is reported to have left the county and travelled to Scotland, apparently in an attempt to evade justice.
Police were able to track him down and arrest the defendant on Thursday 16 July 2026, before he was charged and brought before the courts.
As well as being jailed for three years, he has also been banned from driving for six years.
Detective Constable Molly James, of Dorset County CID, said: “Archie McCann’s extremely reckless actions on Sunday 29 March 2026 left his victim with injuries that he will live with for the rest of his life.
“Through our enquiries we were able to establish McCann as the driver responsible for this incident and worked tirelessly to track him down and ensure he faced the consequences of his extremely dangerous actions.”
