Electric motorbike rider jailed after causing injury to young boy in Christchurch
The rider of an illegal electric motorbike has been jailed after causing serious injury to a young boy in a road traffic collision in Christchurch.
At around 7.30pm on Tuesday 10 June 2025, a collision occurred involving a seven-year-old boy and an illegal electric motorcycle in Fairmile Road.
The rider of the motorbike – 18-year-old Callean Sebastien Wyburn of Bournemouth – drove through a red light at a pedestrian crossing into the path of the victim.
The motorbike was found to be an unregistered Talaria electric motorcycle.
The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to serious facial and dental injuries.
Wyburn stopped at the scene for a couple of minutes, before riding off along the pavement.
The following day, Wyburn attended Bournemouth police station and identified himself as the rider.
The defendant later pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving without a license and driving without insurance. He was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday 2 October 2026 to 18 months in prison.
Police Constable Clare Gillard, of the Roads Policing Team, said: “The young victim has very sadly been left with a permanent scar on his face as a result of this collision. He also continues to require dental treatment due to permanent damage caused.
“Wyburn was riding very dangerously on an unregistered e-motorbike, ignored a red light and struck the young boy who was crossing the road when it should have been safe to do so.
“We will robustly deal with anyone found to be using an illegal e-bike on our roads and we hope this sentence serves as a warning to anyone who is thinking of riding dangerously.
“If you are caught riding one of these vehicles illegally, it will be seized, crushed and recycled. Their unlawful use in public areas puts pedestrians and other road users at risk.”
