Highlighting vital service for victims of sexual offences

The vital role played by Dorset’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) is being highlighted as we mark Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week.

During the national week of action, which runs from Monday 2 February to Sunday 8 February 2026, Dorset Police is shining a spotlight on the role played by The Shores, our SARC, in supporting victims and assisting investigations.

The inclusive service is open to anyone who has been the victim of serious sexual violence, with a professional and compassionate team on hand seven days a week and a 24/7 telephone line.

The service supports victims of both recent and non-recent sexual violence and sexual abuse and there is no obligation for anyone seeking support to report to police.

Victims are in control of decisions around their own medical care and support and if they do choose to report the matter to police, The Shores can capture vital evidence to assist investigators as they seek to hold perpetrators to account.

Detective Superintendent Neil Wright, Dorset Police’s lead for Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), said: “The Shores provides an invaluable support service to victims of sexual violence in Dorset.

“While we would always encourage victims to report offences to the police, we understand that not everybody will feel able to do this or may take time to reach this decision.

“By seeking the support of The Shores, victims will receive an understanding and professional service that treats them with dignity and puts their choices first.

“It also means if they do come to a point further down the line when they choose to make a report to police, there will have been an opportunity to capture vital evidence that can assist our investigation teams in bringing offenders to justice.”

Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said: “Sexual abuse and sexual violence are devastating crimes which leave lasting impacts on individuals, families, and communities. During Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week, I want to reaffirm my strong support for The Shores Sexual Assault Referral Centre and the vital, compassionate work they do every day.

“Co-commissioned by my office, The Shores provides a safe, specialist service for people at some of the most difficult moments of their lives, ensuring victims and survivors are believed, supported, and given access to the care and justice they deserve. Tackling sexual violence requires partnership, prevention, and a clear message that abuse in any form will not be tolerated. I encourage anyone affected to seek support and know that help is available.”
