Man jailed following serious assault in Bournemouth
A man has been jailed following an investigation by detectives into a violent attack in Bournemouth.
James Junior Cunningham, aged 19 and of Bournemouth, has been sentenced to 11 years and 9 months in prison.
On the evening of Thursday 19 December 2025, Cunningham assaulted a man in the area of Boscombe Gardens.
He used a knife to inflict three stab wounds to the victim’s face and head.
The victim – aged in his 20s – was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries, which were not life-threatening or life-changing.
A detailed investigation was launched and following enquiries, Cunningham was arrested and subsequently charged in connection with the incident.
Cunningham was sentenced at Winchester Crown Court on Tuesday 25 August 2026 after pleading guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a bladed article.
Detective Constable Jack Gibson, of Dorset Police, said: “This was a nasty assault which could have had an even more tragic outcome.
“Fast-time enquiries by detectives identified Cunningham as the attacker, and the investigation that ensued allowed us to bring him before court to face justice for his actions.
“Although Dorset has one of the lowest rates of knife crime in the country, we take these offences very seriously and will continue our efforts to remove knife crime from the streets.
“There is no excuse for carrying a knife and we will relentlessly pursue those who choose to carry them and commit offences.”
