Dorset has seen a further decrease in overall crime over the last year – keeping it within the top 10 safest counties in England.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released data on Thursday 23 October 2025, which confirmed that overall crime fell in Dorset by 2.7 per cent between 1 July 2024 and 1 June 2025. Victim-based crime is down by 3.2 per cent and violence against the person dropped by 2.7 per cent. Nationally total crime is down by 1.5 per cent.

The reduction in overall crime further highlights the Force’s commitment to make Dorset a safe county for everyone, whilst remaining tough on crime and relentlessly pursing criminals.

Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Farrell said: “I am pleased to see that crime in Dorset has continued to fall, keeping the county one of the safest areas to live, work and visit.

“During this period, we have seen some marked decreases in crime, including a 10.5 per cent reduction in vehicle offences, a fall in residential burglary by 12.5 per cent and business burglary down by 14.8 per cent. These reductions demonstrate a clear commitment from our teams to ensure the public are better informed on preventative measures, and our efforts to target and disrupt those who intend on committing these offences are delivering positive outcomes.

“Like other parts of the country, we have seen an 11.8 per cent increase in shoplifting, just under a national increase of 12.8 per cent. We remain resolute in our determination to work with local businesses, shopkeepers and partners to tackle shoplifting and target those responsible. While we continue to see improvements through Op Shopkeeper, our initiative for reducing these crimes, we are committed to doing all we can to reduce this crime type and support our business community.”

Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said: “I am pleased to see these latest results, an indication of the continuing improving picture in Dorset.

“Many of these results outperform the national averages, an important aspect in ensuring Dorset remains one of the safest places in the country, and in sending a message that we will not tolerate criminality of any kind.

“I am particularly pleased to see a reduction in burglary, both residential and business related. I know this is one of the crimes residents are most worried about, so these results are vital in sending a strong message that the Force takes these offences seriously and are committed to preventing and acting wherever possible.

“The work to bring down shoplifting offences is focused and ongoing, and alongside the Force I will continue to work with businesses and partners to build confidence, encourage reporting and importantly, get the results which matter and bring these offenders to justice.

“My thanks go to all the Dorset Police officers, staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly in challenging circumstances to deliver these results. Your efforts are appreciated and recognised.”
