A man has been jailed following an investigation by detectives into a serious assault in Upton.

Steven Wenzel, 37 and of Upton, was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday 1 August 2025.

Dorset Police received a report at 4.24pm on Saturday 12 October 2024 that a man aged in his 50s had been punched in the face by a man at the Upton Social Club in Poole Road.

Officers attended alongside the ambulance service and the victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries, including multiple skull fractures and blood clots on the blain.

Following quick-time enquiries, Steven Wenzel was arrested and subsequently charged in connection with the incident.

The defendant faced trial at Bournemouth Crown Court on Thursday 31 July and Friday 1 August 2025, where he was convicted for inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.

Detective Constable Fiona Napier, of Dorset Police, said: “This was a nasty assault committed by Steven Wenzel, who then fled the scene in efforts to evade our officers.

“We responded swiftly to attend the scene and launched a full investigation into the circumstances. I am pleased that we were able to apprehend Wenzel and ensure he faced justice for his actions.

“There is no excuse for Wenzel’s violent actions which left the victim with significant brain injuries and the courts have reflected the severity of this offence with a prison sentence. I would like to thank the victim and his family for their support throughout the investigation.”
