Night-time patrols by officers have been ensuring that visitors and residents in Weymouth can enjoy a safe night out this summer.

As part of the Force’s Good, Safe Summer campaign, increased activity has been taking place in the town centre on Friday and Saturday nights.

Between 7pm and 2am, patrol officers and neighbourhood policing team (NPT) officers have been patrolling areas identified as crime hotspots.

They have engaged with the community, offered re-assurance through high visibility, and responded to ongoing incidents, which have often resulted in arrests and section 35 disposal orders being issued.

Since the dedicated patrols began at the beginning of June, officers have reported lots of positive interactions with members of the public, businesses and door staff who were re-assured to see police out on foot.

As well as patrols by uniformed officers, resources have been further strengthened by teams out on plain-clothed patrols and carrying out licensing visits.

These types of patrols have already been running in the BCP area and have seen positive results.

All of this activity will continue on Friday and Saturday nights over the coming months as part of our efforts to ensure everyone has a Good, Safe Summer.

Inspector Sam Goom, of Weymouth police, said: “Dorset remains a safe place to live, and we want those living and visiting the area at the busiest time of the year to have a safe and enjoyable time.

“Our dedicated patrols in the night-time economy of Weymouth have already received positive feedback from members of the public and local businesses. We hope they demonstrate we are doing all we can to ensure everyone enjoys a Good, Safe Summer.

“However, this activity is just one part of the equation to reducing crime. Reports from the public help us to understand what and where crime is happening in our communities – if we don’t know about it, we can’t put a stop to it. Please continue to make reports to the police because your information will directly influence the work that we do.”
