CCTV captures motorist speeding before serious injury collision in East Dorset
CCTV has captured a motorist speeding just moments before causing a collision which left a man with serious injuries in East Dorset.
At around 9.20pm on Monday 5 August 2024, Dorset Police received a report of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on Wimborne Road East near Ferndown.
It is reported that a black Audi A1, driven by 21-year-old Callum Giddins, failed to stop for officers in the area of the Canford Bottom roundabout before it made off towards Stapehill and collided with a blue Vauxhall Zafira near The Pure Drop pub.
Giddins and the driver of the Vauxhall, aged 58, were both taken to hospital with serious injuries.
A front seat passenger in Giddins’ car, aged 18, also sustained minor injuries.
Following enquiries at the scene, it was established Giddins had a revoked driving licence and no insurance at the time of the collision.
He was also found to be in possession of cannabis and provided a positive result for benzoylecgonine – a breakdown product of cocaine.
Giddins, of Wimborne Minster, was arrested and subsequently charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, using a motor vehicle on a road or in a public place without third party insurance, failing to stop when directed by a police constable, driving a motor vehicle on a road after refusal of grant or revocation of driving licence, driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of specified controlled drug above the specified limit, and possession of a class B drug.
The defendant was sentenced to two years and ten months in prison at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday 11 July 2025 after pleading guilty to all the charges against him.
He has also been banned from driving for five years and five months.
Police Constable Tracey Street, of the Serious Collision Investigation Team, said: “Giddins’ dangerous driving showed utter contempt for both the law and the victims who sustained serious injuries due his reckless actions.
“We were able to quickly identify Giddins as the driver responsible for this collision and compile evidence to put before the court to ensure he was held accountable for his dangerous actions.”
