Update – arrests in connection with reported distraction theft in Wareham

Three people have been arrested in connection with an alleged distraction theft in Wareham.

It was reported that at around 2.40pm on Wednesday 7 September 2022 that a woman aged in her 70s had attended her bank and withdrawn £1,000 in cash. A short time later she was reportedly approached by two women with a clipboard in North Street, who claimed to be acting on behalf of a charity.

The woman gave a £5 donation and walked on, but a short time later she reportedly discovered that an envelope containing the £1,000 cash was missing.

Following enquiries, a 27-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman from Portsmouth were arrested on suspicion of theft and fraud. A 36-year-old woman from the Portsmouth area was also arrested on suspicion of fraud. All three have been released under investigation as enquiries continue.
